. paul ryan has been pretty busy, almost nonstop, out on the campaign trail the last couple of days. and so, you know, i think he'll let his surrogates do the talking for him until the debate gets started. one other thing we heard from kevin madden yesterday on the campaign plane heading into denver yesterday, brooke, you heard over the weekend, chris christie saying that this race is going to be turned upside down that romney will have such a strong performance that it is going to be sort of a game changer. i asked kevin madden about that yesterday, and he said he doesn't think that the campaign doesn't think that one event, one moment during these debates is going to decide and determine everything. they just don't see it that way. they like christie's enthusiasm, they say they're feeding off of it, but they don't exactly agree with that assessment. brooke, we're all sort of looking to tomorrow night to be this big moment that is going to change everything and be a make or break moment. it may not turn out that way. it may be a draw. the candidates move on to the next debate and c
on taxes, yesterday you were on the paul ryan clip, but there is a debate over the romney tax plan, not that he's not going to lower taxes, he may lower taxes and that may be a good thing for the economy, but the question is ultimately does it bring in enough revenue to make it revenue neutral? one of the things they have said about republicans is it would lower the deficits but the taxes have exploded under them. your views? >> there's no question the deficits have exploded under them. the last two decades among the two wars and the mistakes in my opinion, we blew a lot of money. multiples of what we blew before. so, you know, my attitude is that -- >> jimmy, my question is do you have any confidence no matter who is in office that actually the hard cuts that need to be made ultimately to make any text plan deficit neutral are actually going to happen? >> and my question to you comes down to a simple question. >> do you believe in the tooth fairy? >> who does the president listen to? i wonder if you could name for me four or five executives who have been advising the president and
rattner, to be more specific about his policies, which many argue he hasn't been very specific nor paul ryan. >> he hasn't been very specific. but i think his bigger problem is the first one you said. that he's got to create some sense of connectivity or relationship with the voters. i think that's really his goal as well as what we were talking about in the earlier segment of trying to bring a clear depiction of obama's policies and the fact they haven't done everything they were supposed to. >> john harwood, can he do that in a debate? is the debate the setting? that would be when you're most clenched and concerned about every word that comes out of your mouth. how do you show the things mitt romney needs to communicate to the public? >> it's possible. he's got to play really well. one of the nationals' pitchers got hammered the other night and he said i lost my arm slot. and he was talking about the exact right angle of the ball to the delivery of the plate. mitt romney's got to find precisely the right arm slot. aggression with the right amount of respect for a popular president. he
